Palau, located in the western Pacific, about fifteen hundred kilometres east of the Philippines, is a small island state of about twenty-one thousand people. If Palau is not paradise on earth, then it’s the closest thing to paradise that I’ve ever seen. In December 2013, a small group of intrepid divers visited Palau to enjoy the natural beauty but also to witness a rare underwater spectacle. Palau’s manta rays, turtles and sharks attract scuba divers from all over the world.
But we came to search for mating aggregations of humphead parrotfish.
